The project preparations were started in 1950's and its foundation was laid on 20 Fenruary 1970. It was completed 29 October 1973, the 50th anniversary of the establishment of the Turkish Republic. It was constructed by the German Hochtief and the English Cleveland Engineering companies. It looks like the Severn Bridge in England. Thirty five engineers and four hundret Turkish workers were employed during the construction. Its length is 1560m, width 33m, the distance between the high carrying poles (165m) is 1975m. The Bosphorus Bridge carries 200.000 vehicles and 600.000 people a day. It is the 4th of the longest bridges in Europe and the 7th in the world.
